Summary

Part puzzle, part revenge tale, part ghost story, this kaleidoscopic novel set in Vietnam spins half a century of history and folklore into the story of a missing woman。

In 1986, the teenage daughter of a wealthy family gets lost in an abandoned rubber plantation while fleeing her angry father and is forever changed by the experience。

In 2009, pressed into a dangerous scheme by a former lover, a woman captures a rare two-headed cobra。

And in 2011, a young, unhappy American living in Saigon with her sort-of boyfriend disappears without a trace。

Over the course of the novel, the fates of these three women will lock together in an exhilarating series of nested narratives。 Along the way, we meet a young boy sent to a boarding school in the mountains for the métis children of French expatriates just before Vietnam declares its independence from colonial rule in 1945; two Frenchmen trying to start a business with the Vietnam War on the horizon; and the employees of the Saigon Spirit Eradication Co。, called to investigate strange occurrences in a farmhouse on the edge of a forest。 Each new character and timeline brings us one step closer to understanding what binds the three women together。

Written with wit, ambition, and playfulness, this book takes us from sweaty nightclubs to ramshackle zoos, colonial mansions to ex-pat flats, sizzling back-alley street carts to the noisy seats of motorbikes。 Spanning over fifty years and barreling toward an unforgettable conclusion, this is a fever dream about possessed bodies and possessed lands, a time-traveling, heart-pounding, border-crossing marvel of a novel。

This is a hard book to talk about。 Some aspects of it I loved and some were just okay。 You’re jumping around a lot to different times and following different people and the way Kupersmith brings all that together in the end is wonderful。 I also really enjoyed the fantasy/magical realism element to this, I was not expecting it to play such a big role。 At the end of the day though I just felt pretty mediocre about this book as a whole。 If the plot sounds intriguing to you, I would recommend giving This is a hard book to talk about。 Some aspects of it I loved and some were just okay。 You’re jumping around a lot to different times and following different people and the way Kupersmith brings all that together in the end is wonderful。 I also really enjoyed the fantasy/magical realism element to this, I was not expecting it to play such a big role。 At the end of the day though I just felt pretty mediocre about this book as a whole。 If the plot sounds intriguing to you, I would recommend giving it a try but I don’t think it did anything to blow me away。 I did really enjoy her writing style though, and I will be interested in checking out what else she writes in the future。 。。。more

This started out well with a young Vietnamese/American woman, feeling a bit lost, goes to teach English in Saigon。 Then it jumps the shark with some magic realism that I guess just wasn't for me。 Struggled to get through it。 3。5 stars。 This started out well with a young Vietnamese/American woman, feeling a bit lost, goes to teach English in Saigon。 Then it jumps the shark with some magic realism that I guess just wasn't for me。 Struggled to get through it。 3。5 stars。 。。。more

This book is something else!! The way it’s able to flow from life to life of the different characters and slowly let you see how the story comes together is so smart!! Loved every second of it!!

This was weird and fun allegorical horror。 I still wonder what specific aspect of it all made Binh so angry。 There was a lot to be angry about。 This is the second book I've read this year in which a woman gets so completely outraged that she just turns into a dog about it and I guess that's my new favorite genre。 In terms of this novel being actually frightening, I don't know, maybe not。。。but certainly evocative and original。 This was weird and fun allegorical horror。 I still wonder what specific aspect of it all made Binh so angry。 There was a lot to be angry about。 This is the second book I've read this year in which a woman gets so completely outraged that she just turns into a dog about it and I guess that's my new favorite genre。 In terms of this novel being actually frightening, I don't know, maybe not。。。but certainly evocative and original。 。。。more

。。。more

A Vietnamese gothic。 Suuuuuuper creepy and cool。 I'm definitely excited to read more from Kupersmith。I found the historical storytelling interesting and forming a strong sense of place, the imagination so spellbinding to balance the themes that can be quite dark。My one criticism is everything tying together so well。 Like how do all these different characters have meaningful interactions with each other? Captivating book。 The story is like an union becoming unpealed layer after layer。 You are intruduced to different people and during the book their lives become interwoven。 Very artfully composed。

I read this book mainly because I was keen to read a bool about Vietnam, and for me this was the best feature of the book, which strongly evokes the sense of business and chaos of modern Saigon, the beauty of the countryside and the impact of its colonial past。Overall I found the book too complex to be completely engaging as I struggled to remember how the various strands of the story fitted together。 The chapters shift back and forth in time and place, telling the stories of various groups of c I read this book mainly because I was keen to read a bool about Vietnam, and for me this was the best feature of the book, which strongly evokes the sense of business and chaos of modern Saigon, the beauty of the countryside and the impact of its colonial past。Overall I found the book too complex to be completely engaging as I struggled to remember how the various strands of the story fitted together。 The chapters shift back and forth in time and place, telling the stories of various groups of characters not all of them that key to the plot。 The story is pitched as the weaving together of two disappearances; the disappearance of the daughter of a wealthy landowner, and the disappearance of Winnie, a half American language teacher who has travelled to Vietnam to escape from the pressures on her from her high achieving family in America。 The latter story was stronger and more sustained。 The first disappearance seemed to be of less importance than the story of the two brothers Tan and Long and their spirited confident friend, an orphaned girl named Binh。 The haunting of many of the characters by a ghost of the past, and the ability of some to call up ghosts in the form of a mist was very effective, but I grew bored of the many descriptions of characters getting very drunk or high。 Overall an intriguing book but not one I would read again 。。。more

I’m still not sure whether I read this book or whether it was all a fever dream that I imagined。 Build Your House Around My Body spans decades and follows an ever-changing cast of characters through a dark, fantastical story。 The ‘main’ character, Winnie, is a Vietnamese-American woman attempting to find herself in Vietnam while slipping deeper and deeper into a depressive spiral。While I appreciated this story overall, I found myself swinging between bored, confused, and intrigued。 Sadly, too mu I’m still not sure whether I read this book or whether it was all a fever dream that I imagined。 Build Your House Around My Body spans decades and follows an ever-changing cast of characters through a dark, fantastical story。 The ‘main’ character, Winnie, is a Vietnamese-American woman attempting to find herself in Vietnam while slipping deeper and deeper into a depressive spiral。While I appreciated this story overall, I found myself swinging between bored, confused, and intrigued。 Sadly, too much of my time was spent waiting to get to the end of the story rather than appreciating the journey itself。 This novel is often difficult to follow, although I was impressed by the way Kupersmith was able to connect the characters to each other。 There were many instances where I found myself highlighting lines that would have meant little-to-nothing in another book, but that gave me an ‘aha!’ moment in seeing another connection。I would recommend this with the caveat that if you don’t like sweeping storylines that take their time to intersect and become clear, this is probably not the book for you。 It does have a lot of interesting commentary on colonialism and bodily autonomy, but I struggled to untangle this from the story itself。 。。。more

As long as you're paying attention。I。。。 didn't really like any of the characters。 Some arcs were more interesting to me than others, but I didn't find myself hoping to get someone's perspective specifically。 It was only a matter of getting through paragraphs and paragraphs of minor details/some backstory that weren't important until I reached the parts that made more sense。The ending was not unexpected。 I did like the more creepy aspects and implications of it, but I felt pretty underwhelmed by it。 I guess because the story takes so many turns to dead-end places before getting to what it wants to tell。 It was hard to stay invested when I knew I had pages and pages of words that weren't supposed to make much sense to me。 。。。more

(hide spoiler)] And this novel did feel long at times。 It dragged in the middle portion, mainly because I did not care for Long or Tan's POVs。 They were pretty unlikeable and I just。。。didn't want to be bothered reading from their perspectives。 All in all, I enjoyed this book and will definitely check out more by Kupersmith。 。。。more

Interesting book。 I like the setting, and it's an interesting way to build a story。 The time line jumps around a bit, which actually adds to the story quite a bit。 The ending was a bit strange, and I'm not sure I fully understand what happened。 Interesting book。 I like the setting, and it's an interesting way to build a story。 The time line jumps around a bit, which actually adds to the story quite a bit。 The ending was a bit strange, and I'm not sure I fully understand what happened。 。。。more

This book had the potential, but sadly it was all over the place。 The chapters felt like it tried really hard to be mysterious and it was quite disappointing。 Took me quite a while to finish an almost 400-page book, which means for me that it was boring。 It has its ups and downs of course but just when I thought it was about to have the dramatic redemption arc, it left me in dismay even further。 The synopsis on the back of the cover of the book did not match the story AT ALL。 It is horrendous de This book had the potential, but sadly it was all over the place。 The chapters felt like it tried really hard to be mysterious and it was quite disappointing。 Took me quite a while to finish an almost 400-page book, which means for me that it was boring。 It has its ups and downs of course but just when I thought it was about to have the dramatic redemption arc, it left me in dismay even further。 The synopsis on the back of the cover of the book did not match the story AT ALL。 It is horrendous despite the good parts because you'd expect the good parts to be supported by another good part。 I definitely would say this is such a waste of paper and time, would not recommend。 。。。more
